Battle Royale 2016

Unlike the Japanese action thriller of the same name, Battle Royale in the Crossfit world only kills personal records. This annual competition pits all of Brunei’s crossfit community (and some of ASEAN) in a test with one another for the fourth time. But for 2016, things have definitely leveled up.

From its first inception, the competition organised by Getfit Crossfit, has always maintained its ‘best of the best’ spirit; with so many training boxes operating in the Sultanate now, a critical mass of extreme athletes is within reach.

This year’s event will see around 123 competitors from China, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and of course Brunei, run, pull, jump and burpee their way to glory at the International School Brunei (ISB) in Salambigar. An extra sweet incentive has been added to this competition to raise the performance level up: a prize pool of almost BND3000 collectively.

Podium winners this year are also in it to win the individual BND1000 vouchers from a Crossfit-based travel company, Adventure Fit Travel, proving that there really is a holiday for everyone out there (including people who love and live Crossfit!)

While the competitors arrived a day earlier, the actual qualifiers will take place from the 15th to the 16th of January. Three days of workouts where palm rips, blisters and sweat patches in place you didn’t know could sweat, are the norm. Sometime seven proud physical trophies of how hard they trained.

You might think that this sounds slightly mad, and why would these athletes push themselves to such lengths but on observation of a Crossfit class last week, it probably has to do with that priceless gem of wisdom by the fictional movie character Elle Woods- “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands, they just don't.”
